Ken O'Reilly - Executive Officer

After spending the first nine years of his life in Port Hedland, Western Australia, Ken moved to the big smoke where he and his brother grew up in the Perth Hills.

During his university years studying to be a high school physical education teacher, Ken decided to join the Kalamunda VFRS and in 1991 attended his first incident as a qualified volunteer firefighter.

Ken worked at various state and public schools around the Perth metropolitan area. He relocated to Laverton in 1996 and became captain of the local VFRS Brigade a year later.

Having decided on a career change, seven years later Ken left Laverton and his role as captain, to take up a position as safety manager with a construction and mining company.

Working in mining, resulted in Ken and his family travelling around Australia. Ken did not waste any time in joining the local VFRS Brigades. These included South Kalgoorlie, Christmas Island, Northam, and a 6 month period with the Queensland VFRS (Tieri QFRS).

“I have a special bond with all the Volunteer Fire and Rescue Services Brigades in the State,” says Ken.

Ken remained in the mining industry until 2019 when he took on his current role as executive officer for the Volunteer Fire and Rescue Services Association.
