Check out that look of surprise from Gary Deering of Exmouth Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service at the last North West Zone meeting!
"On behalf of North West Zone President Raymond Bonner AFSM, North West Zone Secretary Peter Morgan, it is my honour to present Gary with Life Membership to the North West Zone," says Michael Booth from Karratha Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service, fellow North West Zone Life Member and a dear friend of Gary's.
Here's a summary of Gary's history with Volunteer Fire & Rescue Service:
Gary joined Exmouth VFRS 15 May 1986.
He was their Apparatus Officer for 4 years, Lieutenant for 3 years and Captain for 5 years.
Gary became a Life Member of Exmouth VFRS in 2005 after having given outstanding service to the Brigade.
Alongside firefighting, Gary was the coach of the Junior Running Team and also competed in the Seniors Running Team for 7 years.
After Cyclone Vance Gary was awarded the WA Volunteer Firefighter of the Year.
Outside of Exmouth and the local community:
Gary gave up 10 years of his annual leave to attend FESA / DFES Pre-Easter training at Forrestfield so he could assist the volunteers from the Pilbara Kimberley areas to improve their skills and firemanship.
He was the president of the North West Zone for 5 years, which incorporates the whole of the Pilbara and Kimberley.
In addition, Gary was an executive committee member of the Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service Association for about 15 years, fighting for the best outcomes for all volunteers.
Gary, we know how much the North West brigades appreciate the time and effort you have taken over the years to make a point of visiting them and asking if they had any issues you could assist with.
Congratulations to you Gary! Your life membership is well deserved. Thank you for your service with Volunteer Fire & Rescue and the Association over the last four decades.
